Oh. Give me one second. Seven
report. 09:20 twenty five. This is a meeting of the recreation advisory board. Madam Farr, please call the roll.
Vice chair Sanchez. That's it.
Important. Probably you and I have a of conversations leading up to this. Certainly, you got a a great team of you. I'm just happy to be here in, what, five, six, seven, eight days. It's about new role.
You're also just rolling around by the city council finance committee. Right? Is that right? You're not a plumber yet. No.
And that that's Thursday. Thursday. So we gotta be a little bit careful on your, on your full
well, I think I think you got that. Right? Hope so. Hope so. But I'm looking definitely looking forward to this.
Well, we are really happy to have you and and you and I have known each other for for some time. And while, obviously, director Grace did a phenomenal job and we're missing, we are excited to see all that we will be doing and to get your vision once you have a full week of the ground running over here. So maybe next meeting, we'll get a full presentation from you, I think, on Absolutely. On, you know, some of your observations going into this, some of the things that you wanna accomplish and, like, further conversation about the things that we've talked about, I think, for, you know, as a board and, you know, the progress we've made over the past couple of years and that I know that you both helped to get in this new role. So It's a night.
Very happy to add this. I think tonight, we will there'll be kind of a a group conversation here. So director acting director Julius, director nominee Paul, and assistant director on your. We'll do combination of
Maybe one of these days, we'll graduate and get one of these sweet things. So our our agenda for tonight is to have a presentation that we normally do about the space that we're in right now. So they have a community center, do a brief review of some programming, review of the fall and winter programming that we have registrations coming up on. And I wanna spend a good amount of time talking about rec center construction updates. We have three centers that are under construction right now and closed in various different capacities and for a different period of time.
So we wanna hear more about that and what the plan is to ensure that the team gets getting the services that they need, hopefully, in the spaces that they need. And then we'll open it up for for public comment as we always do. So I'll turn it over to David and Jackie and, Sean and piggyback on a presentation of where we are in Elmont Community Center right now. You know, how we got here.
Yeah. So, again, just to kind of break into, we've actually, we're able to do a a small program. It was about the $3.65. Folks like. Portion of it.
Past administratively operations field trips as well. To have some more programs that align and some of the brand. And what we're doing right now is working with some folks in policy, departments to be able to try that. I I programs we can have in this location once the construction point was done, that I can kinda talk more about on the next slide. But this is just some pictures that you guys can see Some of the final products that I've told you right here.
We were here as well to kinda see what these kids were able to put together. And what they did during that program was they visited centers every Friday, got to got a little bit of presentation as to what this location looks like, what are the kind of the reports of the the themes of this location, then went back and created some ideas as to what product design would be. But it was just, again, really good use of this space during the interim times, during a phase period where we weren't work in the business, we want to save the business to be in there. But now we're kind of getting towards the end, hopefully, with some of the programming and start the construction as simple as you can get into some of the programming units. And what I have identified has come up with the three pillars that this brand has helped them to fund some of the work that's going on this location will allow us to be able to do.
So some things that I wanna kinda that we'll be working on and currently working on is identifying folks we can work with for health, workforce development, education. And, ideally, that the the point would be to have some development of these centers around prevention, first aid training IDs, Narcan training working with our peanut department to be able to do that, and then as well as some, other options as well. Workforce have done some of the things that allow people to have a centralized location for resources and hopefully try to add upon what we've done for this exploration in our summer camps, which I which I'm which you're aware of as well. And then the education piece, again, working with some community organizations, but some are kind of working with and planning needs to be able to provide some more academic opportunities, the programs like you mentioned that all kind of allow a space for those folks, to be in.
So alright. So on the online community center, obviously so I know, Ceci was the director here who previously I don't believe that there's a director for the SOE right now, but we're in the search process on that. Is that correct?
So at this current moment, I just I would see Sean doing his first his first week here. That was kind of the one of the one of the main, agenda items that we wanna take care of is this is the next couple of months is looking at what that should look like because a lot of the work that's going on in these locations, not only in Elmwood, but Davey Lopes and Johnson, we're happy to be facilitating and and managed by specific individuals. So that's something I've kinda mentioned to Sean is that we just kinda focus our attention on getting somebody in that seat as soon as possible. Obviously, using transitions, kinda just making sure someone went went well, but now that we can kinda focus more internally and kind of aligning ourselves with some of these programs, that's definitely something on my radar for sure.
So is this fit is this facility considered closed because of the construction? Or
As of right now, we don't have any consistent programming. Everything that we do really is just contingent on this the global safety, which we get a direct report from public property when we're actually working with the contractors and the folks that are in the building.
And so the against the construction that's going on, though, is that does that prohibit the building from being open, or is
that sort of cornered off and separate? No. So right now, it would be tough to to reopen this program. You you gotta have to see a little bit of the tour, because they're doing some flooring work in that in that lower level area as well as some some work on the upstairs to connect the some of the conference rooms to other rooms that are in that upstairs location. And if you've seen on the big conference room, there's some walls that have been pulled out to the doors and, you know, electrical work and also working on an intercom system that'll be in the front office of this location.
So just to kind of make our billing a lot more safe and and funding for community trips. Almost done. What's the estimated time we will align on with this program? So right now, it's tentatively, the end of this year. The end of this year.
Correct. So, like, late late November, early December. And
then just a little more clarity. You said the the whoever gets hired or or whoever takes over the role of being in charge of this building, they're gonna be overseeing other
rec centers, you said, or more so programming than rec centers because, again, like, the other locations that are big boats, Johnson are all benefiting from this in this plan as well. So the programs that are that are listed here or at least the program types that are listed here will have to be facilitated, under the grant for at least the first five years. So that specifically, Ceci, what she was doing before, the director the community center, who's around with us, was identifying partners that we can work with, organizations that we can work with, as well as building, like, community engagement network to be able to share this information as well as bring people in to these locations. So, yes, the programming under these three pillars will happen at more than just the ECC. It'll happen at Daily Loves and as well as, Jocelyn.
But this building does not need to be uniquely and specifically for just that. No. I don't know. We can run recreation programs too. Correct.
saw this this past semester. Right. You know, that's we've an example of what that program can look like. But, yes, we will we will have the ability to have more than just
But in order to satisfy the grant, it has to have these components in it. Yeah. Right. Yeah. And and so just so I'm clear too.
So there was a lot of work done in this building. I think it concluded last year. Right? Like, there was a big renovation that was done in this building, like, all of this all of this is new. This was in much worse shape.
Mhmm. I've been going back a couple of years ago. Yeah. And we were here for, like, a ribbon cutting last year, maybe. Think it was.
I think it was a little maybe a little bit longer than that.
Yeah, it wasn't in the best shape. We had Right. Right. There were a few issues here and there, that were taken care of in between.
So was that was it water issues?
Or I believe it was a roofing issue. A roof. Yeah. Yeah. And a bathroom issue.
But I think since that time, those have been remedied.
Am I correct? Yeah. There's and those those have been addressed. They're we we've seen that be addressed, and I've seen some some issues coming there. So we kind of reinforce the fact that that needs to be looked at finally.
But as I mentioned to you before, we is why we've been able to have
We hire accountable Yes. This work. I'm assuming they are
I believe they will call back.
The tab on this stuff. Yes.
Exactly. I believe that there were several callbacks to remedy the situation that were an issue. Like I said, the roof was an issue. Bathrooms were an issue. Now both of them are fine.
