Discussion of Additional Commission Members

Commissioners discussed identifying and appointing additional members to the commission. A suggestion was made to review the local veteran recipient list to find potential female veterans or Gold Star family members before the next meeting.

Review of Municipal Veterans Benefits

Staff reported that 1,075 individuals in Providence currently receive municipal veteran property exemptions. Commissioners discussed comparing Providence's benefit amounts and structure against other Rhode Island municipalities.

Discussion of Ordinance Section 21-128.1 and State Tax Exemptions

Assistant City Solicitor Susana Spolme presented legal findings showing that certain city tax exemption ordinances exceed authority granted under state statute. The commission discussed drafting legislation and seeking General Assembly sponsors to update state law in January.

Discussion of Future Activities of the Commission

The commission reviewed upcoming meeting dates for September and October and outlined preparations for the November 7 Veterans Day event at City Hall. Members confirmed that no meeting would be held during August.

A motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Councilman Taylor and seconded by Director Yarn. The motion was unanimously approved and the meeting was adjourned.
