Call to Order and Roll Call
Chair Miguel Sanchez called the meeting of the Pathway to End Gun Violence Advisory Council to order. A quorum was established with seven members present and five absent.
Item 1: Welcome and Introductions
The council noted the transition of member roles, including Robert Bailey joining to replace Joe Vilissen from Justice Assistance. Council members had no objections to skipping extended introductions.
Item 2: Review of Previous Meeting Notes
Staff clarified that minutes for this committee are posted within statutory deadlines and do not require formal approval. The chair noted the clarification and confirmed the item would be omitted on future agendas.
Item 3: Update on Current Initiatives and Progress
Members discussed recent community violence intervention updates, including Nonviolence Institute summer programs and a $4 million statewide CVI grant application. They also reviewed city youth programming, summer job opportunities, and takeaways from the Giffords CVI conference in California.
Item 4: Presentation from the Providence Police Department
Detective David Perez presented gun seizure statistics, enforcement initiatives, and department community engagement activities such as wrestling and basketball camps. Council members and the presenter discussed crime mobility trends, the impact of housing instability, and targeted youth outreach.
Items 5 & 6: Open Discussion and Next Steps
The committee discussed future plans, including drafting a mission statement, creating a map of local community-based organizations, and coordinating employment programs. Policy staff also offered assistance with research and data collection ahead of the next meeting in September.
Public Comment
Members of the public and community partners introduced themselves and expressed their support for the committee's gun violence intervention efforts. The council chair thanked attendees for participating and sharing their perspectives.
